CANADA

Canada has not an official program to work as an au pair. Who wants to work in Canada as an au pair can use the "Live-in Caregiver Program". This is a special program to bring into Canada employees who occupy positions for which there are not Canadians available, such as people who are looking after children or elderly or disabled people or housework. This program is administered by Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

To join this program, the au pair must meet four conditions:

1. have successfully completed the equivalent of Canadian secondary school;

2. have an employment contract between the au pair and the family, you must obtain a visa before arriving in Canada;

3. the au pair must read, speak and understand English or French;

4. have 6 months of "full-time training in the care of children", or 12 months of a paid full-time job in childcare, care of elderly people or first aid or at least 6 months of continuous employment with the same employer in an occupation related to the live-in caregiver.

With this program you can work a year in Canada and the permit can be renewed for another year. After two years of employment, program participants may obtain the residence. The Au Pair must be aged between 18 and 30 years old. The duration of the stay is one year extendable for another year. The working hours are 40 hours per week. The pay is the salary that corresponds to the minimum hourly rate set by each individual province or territory of Canada. It is subject to normal taxation on income. The travel costs are in charge of the Au Pair. The au pair should have health insurance.
