
BELGIUM
The age to work as an au pair in Belgium is between 18 and 25 years old.
Duration of the stay is maximum one year. If the au pair changes the family during the stay the duration should not exceed one year in all.
Pocket money is about 450 euro monthly and the payments go directly into the au pair’s account.
The working time is 4 hours per day for a maximum of 20 hours per week in all. The au pair must have a free day per week and an entire weekend per month, she/he is not allowed to take another job in Belgium until she/he is an au pair.
The au pair must have a basic knowledge of the language spoken in the family (French, German), and she /he must attend a language course during the stay in Belgium. The course is provided at a school legally recognized that provide the au pair with a certificate stating her assistance. The au pair must be in possession of a high school diploma or must demonstrate she has attended school up to 17 years old.
The host family must stipulate the au pair sickness insurance and should also take care of a personal liability insurance and accident insurance.
The host family must have at least one child under the age of 13 years old.
A Flemish host family can accommodate a Walloon girl and a Walloon host family can accommodate a Flemish girl.
The family must provide the girl with a private room.
Citizens of the European Union and Iceland, Monaco, Liechtenstein, needn't a visa or permission to work in order to be an au pair in Belgium.
Citizens of non-EU countries need both the work permit and the visa.
For these young girls and boys is the host family who will be in charge of requesting this permission of employment and the work permit type B at the Office of migration in the region where they live. To this request is added a certificate of good health of the Au Pair and the contract of employment. The au pair must also apply for a visa at the Belgian Consulate or Embassy in her/his country when she/he comes into possession of a work permit in Belgium.
