To be an au pair in Norway you must be aged between 18 and 30 years old, and you have to
obtain a work permit, which must be requested at Norwegian Embassy in your country before entering in Norway. The work permit is valid for a maximum of two years.
You have to hold a contract signed by the family and the au pair.
The au pair must be registered at the police within 2 weeks of her/his arrival in Norway to receive a residence permit.
Travel expenses are in charge of the Au Pair.
Working hours are 30 per week and in any case not more than 5 hours per day. The au pair has the right of 48 hours free per week, which 24 hours must be continuous.
Every two weeks the au pair must have a free Sunday and she/he is free on national holidays. Furthermore, the au pair must have a free afternoon per week and she/he must have the opportunity to attend a Norwegian language course.
The au pair has 25 days of vacation per year.
The payment is around 3500 NOK per month plus 500 NOK monthly for public transport. Fees are paid with a percentage based on the received payment. In any case the au pair must be registered at the Tax Office.
The host family must speak Norwegian.
The host family can also be mono parental, but only families with at least one minor child can host an au pair.
The au pair has to live with the family but she/he has the right to have her own room. She/he also must have experience with children and a basic knowledge of English.
The au pair must be covered by health insurance stipulated with the Norwegian National Health Service. Furthermore, the au pair must be registered at the Social Register Office to obtain a social security number.
