Useful Information

General legislation on the exchange on equal terms (au pair).

The 'au pair' is a specific category that is neither that of a student, nor that of an employee. The AU PAIR programmes are projects of cultural exchanges for learning and/or the processing of a foreign language. In Europe, 'au pair' is regulated by the Strasbourg Agreement adopted by the European Council on the 11-24-1969.
It is also possible to work as an 'au pair' in the United, States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.  In cases outside the European Union it is important to research carefully on the various provisions in force in the country in question.  To work in other countries outside the European Union it is important to obtain a Work Permit and before departing to obtain private health coverage.

The rules on visas and the regulations for travel vary from country to country. Check the bottom of the page for any information regarding the country that interests you, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises on departure, or when the au pair arrives at your home.
