ITALY

The age to be an au pair in Italy must be between 18 and 30 years old.
The duration of stay can’t exceed the limit of 1 year, it’s extendable for up to another year.
Working hours depending on the formula chosen. There are four different formulas.

Demi  au pair: working hours are 15 per week in 5 days, with 3 hours per day,
2-3 nights of baby-sitting and 1 full day off per week,
with a pocket money of 120 € per month;

Demi  au pair plus: working hours are 20 per week in 5 days, with 4 hours a day,
2 nights of baby-sitting a week, 2 whole days off and 3 evenings off per week
with a pocket money of 160 € per month;

Au Pair: working hours are 30 per week in 6 days, 5 hours per day, and 2-3 nights of baby-sitting,
2/3 afternoons/evenings off, 3/4 evenings off a week, and 1 full day off.
Pocket money of 240 € a month;

Au pair plus: working hours are 40 per week in 6 days, plus 2-3 nights of baby-sitting,
1 whole day off, and 3-4 nights off a week.
Pocket money of 300 € per month.

For every 6 months of work, the host family must give at the au pair 2 weeks paid off.
Au pair must have enough spare time to follow a language course.
Costs for the language course are in charge of the au pair.
Travel cost is always in charge of the au pair.
An au pair who not have a health insurance valid in Italy can join voluntarily to the National Health Service (SSN). The host family has to register the au pair at the SSN within 10 days of her/his arrival in the family.
Citizens of EU and EFTA as well as the domains of French Overseas La Reunion, Martinique, Guadlupe, Guyana  as well as an EEA Member States may use the European Health Insurance Card (TEAM).
The host family must not pay any social security contributions at the au pair, but it is important to take out a private insurance called Civil Liability Policy. This insurance covers also the damage caused by persons placed as au pair. It’s responds in case of accident of the au pair looks after the children.

Au pairs coming from EU countries can enter in Italy without have to apply for a visa, also the future host family will not require any “Nulla Osta” to employment and not a work permit is required. If you stay more than three months, however, you should ask at the police (Questura) the residence permits for EU citizens.

The au pair from non-EU countries must apply, through the host family, at the “ Ufficio provinciale del Lavoro”  a work permit for reasons of employment. When the host family has obtained the permission to work, it will require a “Nulla Osta” to employment at the “Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione” at the Prefecture of the place of residence of the family. The work permit and the Nulla Osta is sent to the au pair because he/she can apply for a visa at the Italian Embassy abroad. Au pairs must apply for a non-residence permit to the police of the place where the host family resides within 8 days of entry in Italy. The residence permit is required for reasons of employment. To apply for the residence is required the permit to work and the Nulla Osta. Furthermore the au pair must be enrolled in the Italian National Health Service.

Working Holiday Program
Working Holiday Program is for young  people of Australia and New Zealand aged between 18 and 30 years old. Participation in the Working Holiday Program is possible only once. The main reason for the partecipation must be to want to spend the holidays. Those who apply for a Working Holiday visa must have no children. Au pairs must be in possession of a travel document that guarantees their return. If at their arrival they are not a ticket they should have enough financial resources to buy one. For those who are equipped with a working holiday visa, the work permit will be issued at the request of the host family after the entry of the young in Italy for a period of 6 months maximum. The host family will need to apply to the Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione at the Prefectures. After the arrival of the young in Italy, the host family must apply for the Nulla Osta at  the Ufficio Provinciale del Lavoro.

Working Holiday Program for Canada is for young aged between 18 and 35 years old. Participation in the Working Holiday Program is possible only once. The main reason for the stay must be want to spend the holidays. Participants at the Working Holiday Program will be granted a residence permit for employment purposes for a period of 6 months. Young people who wish to participate in the Working Holiday must be Canadian citizens and resident in Canada, in possession of a valid Canadian passport. The youth must have sufficient financial means to maintain their self during the first weeks in Italy. Au pair must apply for a visa before leaving Canada, he/she can not get a visa after the  arrival in Italy. Within eight days of arrival in Italy, the holder of a Working Holiday visa must go to the police in the province where his/her family live to request a residence permit. After the arrival of the young in Italy and after the granting of residence permits, the host family must apply for a Nulla Osta  to the Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione  at the Prefectures. Participants in the Working Holiday program will conclude for the entire duration of stay an health insurance.
